American Carnage…No More Thoughts and Prayers

Our Congressional leaders need to.. #TakeAKnee! Yep.

Envisioning The American Dream

Mass Shootings in America no more thoughts and prayers Uncle Sam need to get off his knees and take action. Prayers are not a political policy. Sutherland Springs joins the much too long list of mass shootings in recent American history and as usual Congressional lawmakers alike rushed to send out their “thoughts and prayers” but continue to fail to act to end gun violence. Collage by Sally Edelstein

Saying prayers is not enough. Again.

Our Congressional leaders need to get up off their knees and do something about gun violence and ban assault rifles.

Offering prayers but failing to act to end gun violence make their prayers ring hollow.

We need to take meaningful legislative action that truly brings meaning to our prayers and make a consequential difference in the lives of Americans.

Here We Go Again

The routines are numbingly familiar by now.

Every time a mass shooting happens, lawmakers immediately offer “thoughts and prayers” as they…

When Will Girl’s Generation (SNSD) Disband for Good?

It’s too many girls in this K-pop group! Right?

Stephen Diagram

Let me start by saying I am by no means asking that they break up anytime soon,

but they’ve been around for so long that its a discussion worth having,

especially since they’ve been on the decline since Jessica left the group.

With their recent release of Holiday Night to help celebrate their ten year anniversary, SNSD managed to reach number 2 on the South Korean Gaon Album Chart. Number 2 just isn’t in the blood for a group that used to completely dominate the South Korean music charts.

This begs the question of when will SM Entertainment finally pull the plug on the girls?

Tiffany is constantly under fire; when was the last time you saw someone bias Fany?

As for the solo careers: Tiffany, Jessica, Seohyun and Hyoyeon have been doing mediocre jobs at building hype around their lone music ventures.

Though I do personally love Taeyeon’s…

Immigration- RAISE Act or Race Act…You Decide

The author Ishmael Reed would call this “RAISE act”, awarding whiteness.

Envisioning The American Dream

collage Lady Libert tears and welcome mat Once again Trump pulls up the welcome mat to the rest of the worlds with his callous attack on immigration. Donald Trump just doesn’t like the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses that the Statue of Liberty beckons.

Only In TrumpLand  does Lady Liberty lament : “Give me your xenophobes, your angry, your middle masses yearning to be free of those damn foreigners….”

Donald Trump has been busy recently taking up the case of oppressed white people  first going after affirmative action and now keeping out those darn foreigners by supporting the RAISE Act which would slash the number of immigrants admitted to the US while favoring those who spoke English and had certain education levels, and skills.

White Trash

Food for thought in the era of *President* Trump.

The Daily Context

This is the second in a series of posts reviewing the NY Times’ 6 Books to Help Understand Trump’s Win. The first installment is here

Nancy Isenberg, White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America. New York: Penguin Books, 2016.

Nancy Isenberg’s White Trash uses class and the history of poor whites to reveal the lie at the heart of the American dream. Isenberg seeks to tell a story that “we as a people have trouble embracing: the pervasiveness of a class hierarchy in the United States” (xxviii-xxix). The continual presence of the poor “reveals an uneasy tension between what Americans are taught to think the country promises—the dream of upward social mobility—and the less appealing truth that class barriers almost invariably make that dream unobtainable” (xxvii-xxviii). Something, she argues, is rotten in the United States.

I Am Not Your Negro, A Review

The Story of the Negro in America, is the story of America.

Whispers of a Womanist

James Baldwin’s “I am Not Your Negro” succeeds in bridging past and present racial truths earning them a much deserved place in contemporary conversation. One of the most troubling ideologies of contemporary culture is the belief that the turmoil afforded to black life, is isolated, or new. The films succeeds in drawing the necessary connection between current culture and a not so distant past of lynchings, beatings, poverty and murders.

The film takes the reader through time, engaging multiple perspectives and images that will surely engrave themselves into the viewer’s memory indefinitely. Although I have seen pictures of a dying Malcolm X on the stretcher countless times, something about seeing this photo last night caused a hot tear to run down my cheek. We all know that Malcolm is dead, the reminder somehow just seems as cruel as it is necessary. The film issues similar views of Dr. King, and Medgar…

Whose America?

Donald Trump is nothing more than a crypto-Fascist enabler!

My Two Cents

img_1701-1 Hundreds of thousands protested along 42nd Street in Manhattan during the Women’s March.

Crowds of protesters flooded the streets of every major city in the United States; hundreds of thousands in Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York City and Boston. Even my hometown of Miami drew over 10,000 protesters. To think, just days before the mass demonstrations, I had no idea of how immense the protests would be. As my social media feed continued to update, I learned that it was not just a movement in America, but it was a worldwide collaboration. London, Nairobi, Berlin, Paris and Prague too? Over 1 million people worldwide protested on Saturday (see article Washington Post ). It was a worldwide march lead by women, with a unified message; the disapproval of the recently elected United States President, Donald Trump.

There has been a tremendous amount of controversy surrounding this campaign and his ascent to…

Trump’s Dreaming of a White Male Cabinet

Looks like Jim Crow by another name to me!

Envisioning The American Dream

What’s wrong with this picture? Nothing if you’re Donald Trump.

Yes, Donald Trump is actually making good on one of his campaign promises-make America white male again. Trump’s all star,  all boys club administration plucked from the corporate powers and wealthy elite has a nice retro feel to it. Perfect for locker room banter.

If they are confirmed by the senate Trumps 4 top Cabinet officials will all be white men.

vintage illustration men toasting each other

So gals, no reason to worry your pretty little heads trying to figure out that big old scary economy, or foreign affairs. You  can rest assured that Americas will be in safe hands ( albeit tiny) under Donald Trump’s all boys club.

And the power will stay that way.

In fact as Rachel Maddow pointed out, the line of succession to the presidency which includes the speaker of the house and the senate president pro tempore,  is sure as…

Hamilton, Racebending, and Racist Nerds

O.K. I’m sold but what’s a racist nerd?

ProtoGeek

Hamilton Album CoverHamilton, the hip-hop musical starring the Founding Fathers and the best thing on planet Earth right now, recently found itself in a spot of controversy when some took umbrage with a casting call that said the show was “seeking non-white men and women” for its lead cast. Some made a stink about the listing, labeling it with made-up phrases like “reverse racism” and other nonsense. Though the wording of the listing was changed to state that the characters (and not the sought after actors) would be non-white, a spokesperson for the show reaffirmed the cast and crew’s philosophy of only casting people of color for its revolutionary leads.

Honestly, what I found most astonishing about the whole incident was that it was the first time I’d seen any amount of negativity surrounding the show’s racebending of the Founding Fathers. For months, Hamilton has been taking over the internet and pop culture at large, and not a single time had I…
