The Story of the Negro in America, is the story of America.
James Baldwin’s “I am Not Your Negro” succeeds in bridging past and present racial truths earning them a much deserved place in contemporary conversation. One of the most troubling ideologies of contemporary culture is the belief that the turmoil afforded to black life, is isolated, or new. The films succeeds in drawing the necessary connection between current culture and a not so distant past of lynchings, beatings, poverty and murders.
The film takes the reader through time, engaging multiple perspectives and images that will surely engrave themselves into the viewer’s memory indefinitely. Although I have seen pictures of a dying Malcolm X on the stretcher countless times, something about seeing this photo last night caused a hot tear to run down my cheek. We all know that Malcolm is dead, the reminder somehow just seems as cruel as it is necessary. The film issues similar views of Dr. King, and Medgar…

Donald Trump is nothing more than a crypto-Fascist enabler!
Hundreds of thousands protested along 42nd Street in Manhattan during the Women’s March.
Crowds of protesters flooded the streets of every major city in the United States; hundreds of thousands in Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York City and Boston. Even my hometown of Miami drew over 10,000 protesters. To think, just days before the mass demonstrations, I had no idea of how immense the protests would be. As my social media feed continued to update, I learned that it was not just a movement in America, but it was a worldwide collaboration. London, Nairobi, Berlin, Paris and Prague too? Over 1 million people worldwide protested on Saturday (see article Washington Post ). It was a worldwide march lead by women, with a unified message; the disapproval of the recently elected United States President, Donald Trump.
There has been a tremendous amount of controversy surrounding this campaign and his ascent to…

Looks like Jim Crow by another name to me!
What’s wrong with this picture? Nothing if you’re Donald Trump.
Yes, Donald Trump is actually making good on one of his campaign promises-make America white male again. Trump’s all star, all boys club administration plucked from the corporate powers and wealthy elite has a nice retro feel to it. Perfect for locker room banter.
If they are confirmed by the senate Trumps 4 top Cabinet officials will all be white men.
So gals, no reason to worry your pretty little heads trying to figure out that big old scary economy, or foreign affairs. You can rest assured that Americas will be in safe hands ( albeit tiny) under Donald Trump’s all boys club.
And the power will stay that way.
In fact as Rachel Maddow pointed out, the line of succession to the presidency which includes the speaker of the house and the senate president pro tempore, is sure as…

O.K. I’m sold but what’s a racist nerd?
Hamilton, the hip-hop musical starring the Founding Fathers and the best thing on planet Earth right now, recently found itself in a spot of controversy when some took umbrage with a casting call that said the show was “seeking non-white men and women” for its lead cast. Some made a stink about the listing, labeling it with made-up phrases like “reverse racism” and other nonsense. Though the wording of the listing was changed to state that the characters (and not the sought after actors) would be non-white, a spokesperson for the show reaffirmed the cast and crew’s philosophy of only casting people of color for its revolutionary leads.
Honestly, what I found most astonishing about the whole incident was that it was the first time I’d seen any amount of negativity surrounding the show’s racebending of the Founding Fathers. For months, Hamilton has been taking over the internet and pop culture at large, and not a single time had I…

It’s always about the money! Mo’ money & nothing to show for it!
I was scrolling down Facebook and came across this short video of a Ted Talk. I decided to watch it because it was a young black woman speaking, and that pretty much always catches my attention. The first sentence she said got me, I was sucked in.
“Why is it that 5000 units of our currency is only worth one unit of your currency, when we are the ones with the actual gold reserves?”
I was like, Hell yea! Why is our currency worth so much more?? Africa has all the resources.
And then I was mesmerized by her voice, and her public speaking skills.
She doesn’t raise her voice. She makes sure that she has your full attention so that you can really listen to her, not just hear her. She is self-assured and sassy with her pursed lips and neck snaps. Most importantly, she is unapologetic.

The GOP of today is not the Grand Old Party of Abe Lincoln.
As you may know, prior to the festive season, Donald Trump got himself into some hot water, with some very unchristian comments aimed at Muslims. He said, he’d like to ban all Muslims from the US “until we can figure out what’s going on” (of course this very statement shows how clueless he and his supporters are as regards recent US foreign policy in the region). Needless to say, this was seen as going too far, even by the fairly high bar of Republicans. Even Bill O’Reilly thought it was racist!
An all too common problem for Republicans candidates is the need to outdo one another in terms of taking increasingly insane positions. The GOP bigot brigade expect a candidate to be a bible thumping, pro-gun, global warming denying, young earth creationists, xenophobic who rejects vaccines and “science”. Consider that the major black…

I never knew corporate welfare was this BIG. Wow!
The “innovative” corporations so admired by neoliberal capitalism and its cheerleaders in the Forth Estate are innovators, but not so much of technology but of ways to package it, then in using some of the profits they’ve made off taxpayer-funded research into changing laws to make ever more profits while those who paid for all that research are driven deeper into economic despair.
If you consider all that a bit harsh, then pay close attention to the dissection of an iPhone during the first part of this latest documentary from the Dutch public television documentary series VPRO Backlight:
VPRO Backlight: The Smart State
We think new technology is developed by hip companies like Google and Apple. But is this true? VPRO Backlight explores the innovation climate in Europe, to find out what role governments and the private sector play in this. Who finances the development, and who…
